چکیده

Satellites offer a promising alternative for mobile access to the Internet by both pedestrians, and more importantly, from vehicles. As such, satellites provide an essential complement to the cellular radio (UMTS) infrastructure in sparsely populated areas where high bandwidth UMTS cells cannot be economically deployed. In this paper, we analyse various mobile Internet applications in representative urban scenarios for two LEO constellations (one with polar orbits and the other with inclined orbits), as well as for some simple GEO configurations. To this end, we develop a satellite channel propagation model that includes shadowing from surrounding building skylines based on actual data in a built-up area. Using these tools, we analyse various Internet applications and the performance of various TCP schemes in different topologies. Copyright # 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Resource Reservation Protocol for Mobile Satellite Communication

The Internet Engineering Task Force is working on extending the traditional TCP/IP model for supporting multimedia and real-time applications on the Internet. Thus, new protocols have been developed such as the Resource Reservation Protocol. With the rapid growth of mobile networks, the IETF is also working on creating and extending the existing protocols to support mobile users. This has led t...

Medium Access Control Protocols of the PRMA Type in non-Geostationary Satellites

The challenge of future mobile multimedia networks is to provide worldwide tetherless communication services. Low Earth Orbit-Mobile Satellite Systems (LEO-MSSs) will play a significant role by filling the coverage gaps of future generation terrestrial cellular networks. This lecture presents research results on demand-assignment Medium Access Control (MAC) schemes able to share efficiently LEO...

Wireless access to the global Internet: mobile radio networks and satellite systems

The widespread diffusion of second generation cellular mobile radio systems, with third generation ones underway, has fostered the development of packet-based wireless services, which is going to make mobile radio networks a viable way for Internet access. Wireless LANs are also gaining popularity, with higher-speed IEEE 802.11a solutions being deployed. In the satellite environment, there is a...

Congestion management in access networks with long propagation delay

Satellite networks are going to play an important role in the global information infrastructure. Satellites can be used to provide Internet services to fixed users and to mobile users. However, recent measurements show that the satellite link efficiency is only about 30%. In order to improve the performance of Internet over satellite, a new protocol called Receiver Window Backpressure Protocol ...
